Default Gardening in Tight Spaces

What is the best way to garden in a tight space (if you barely have a yard, for example)? Would you rather devote a small area to garden, or make the whole area a garden retreat?

A friend of mine who owns a garden home and has one of those postage stamp sized enclosed back yards (you know, the type where you could mow the lawn by moving the lawn chair and getting out the weed whacker) chose to take most of the space and turn it into a vegetable gadren that had a small sitting area and a circular path so you could walk around and see how each of the vegetables were doing. You could literally stay on the path to pick the vegies, do the fertilizing and howing, etc.

That sounds like a great idea! Your friend definitely sounds like he/she made the most of that small yard.
