No doubt sleep is necessary for healthy living. For good sleep you should have no tension and i think it is most dificult these days.

Wow. How many hours of sleep does every average/get on a regular basis?

I never liked the "recommended hours of sleep" because they always seemed to change depending on who you'd ask and/or what age range you fall in...

Does anyone here believe in self-induced insomnia?

LOL. Sadly, my self-induced insomnia comes in the from of a computer and the internet. It's any wonder why it takes me a while to get to sleep. Information overload is like... madness.

I once went five days with only about an hours sleep (split up into 10 minute segments) - I actually functioned incredibly well compared to what you would expect. It's not something I'd want to do again, but it was a necessity at the time (the building I worked in was struck by lightning, and I was the only one who could fix some VITAL systems, it was mega crisis time).

I read somewhere that short sleep bursts like that are very productive, and can be more valuable than several hour long sleep periods. My experience seems to back that up.

Sleep is very very very important...I usually get 7+ hours of sleep each night...but being 18 gives me little responsibility...

It's so annoying when I lie there and can't go to sleep! And it seems that
the more I try to stop thinking about whatever's in my mind, the worse it
gets and then I get more awake. I guess that's what is called a vicious
circle. One thing I don't do, though, is get up. If I'd get up or turn the
light on, it would be even worse.

I'm like that too, Katharina. If I toss and turn, I at least have a shot at dozing, but if I get up...it's over.

Yes... I have heard advice over the years that will say something like "read a novel for a while, that always makes you sleepy" or "watch tv for an hour." But for me either of those things would assure that I'd still be awake for hours. I'd rather take my chances and stay in the darkness trying to doze off.
