Holidaymakers in Brighton will find it easier to be eco-friendly this summer due to new seafront recycling bins in the popular resort.

Glass, cardboard, paper, tins, cans and plastic bottles can all be disposed of in the new bins.

Four metre high flags next to the bins make them easy to locate.

Brighton and Hove City Council installed the five sets of recycling bins across the busiest stretch of the seafront in a bid to improve the city’s recycling rates.

“Beach-side recycling is the first step in our drive to enable people to recycle in the city’s busiest visitor areas,” said Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for the environment.

“We want to make it easy and convenient to recycle and we’ll be following up with sites in the city centre.”

In addition to the seafront bins, thirty on-street recycling bins are planned for the city centre and, if the pilot proves successful, more will be installed across the city.

One in five Brits who holidayed abroad last year are planning a UK staycation this year due to the recession.
