People in over 175 cities around the world were Tweeting for charity yesterday, in a Twestival to raise awareness of the need for clean drinking water in majority world nations.

The Twestival was expected to raise $1 million for the 1.1 billion people around the world who can’t access clean drinking water.

Money raised from the Twestival will go to charity:water - a nonprofit organisation bringing clean water to people in the majority world.

Charity:water founder Scott Harrison said: “The need for clean and safe drinking water worldwide is real and pressing, and there are effective solutions that can radically change lives.”

The Twestival is a worldwide festival organised on micro-blogging service Twitter - and 20,000 people from Bethlehem to Birmingham, Beijing to Boston planned to take part in the event.

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams said: “We at Twitter are constantly amazed at the daily initiatives, events, movements and moments we see on Twitter, but Twestival has blown us away.

“The global and city teams have done an amazing job and we’re as excited as everyone!”
