EU Car CO2 to go Down 17% in 4 years.

It all ended with a surprise vote in the Environment Committee of the European Parliament on the proposed limits on CO2 emissions from cars.

Contrary to expectations, the MPs voted against a gradual introduction of a cap on greenhouse gas emissions that will see a 17% overall reduction in vehicle gas emissions.

The biggest objectors to the plans were the big German manufacturers who managed to get Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel to stand their corner in a fight that she eventually lost.

The EU Commission proposed that the average CO2 emissions from cars should be reduced from 2012 to 130 grams per kilometer at the tumultuous meeting.

Some MPs had attempted a compromise for a gradual reduction of the ceiling on carbon dioxide emissions from engines back from 2012 to 2015.

Even the sanctions committee remained tough and in line with the EU Commission.

Producers who exceed the average levels from 2012 will be fined €50 for each and every CO2 delinquent vehicle they produce, although this figure had originally been €95.
