Bizarre Call By UK Companies To Halt Climate Change

Some of the best known British high Street names have joined to lobby the government to do something about the climate situation.

The group includes retail giants Tesco and B&Q, as well as Lloyds TSB and more surprising companies such as the British Airports Authority and, even more controversially, E.ON the international power company.

The group has called for what it refers to as “urgent and comprehensive” action from all political parties to help alleviate the global warming situation.

The band of corporate giants is led by the Prince of Wales’s UK Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change.

They want urgent action to change our present climate catastrophe course with serious cuts in greenhouse gases now rather than later.

Not surprisingly, some eco-groups including the ever watchful Greenpeace are a little confused by the support of some of the participants.

Greenpeace are practically shocked to see E.ON’s name on the plea to save the planet.

This is after all the company that wants to build the first UK coal fired power station to be constructed in several decades.

The Prince of Wales Group all agreed to and signed a letter to all Political Party leaders, urging them to forget the economic problems the country faces and rise to meet the challenges by joining together to fight climate change.

All of this does sound a little confusing and has the feel of teenagers wanting a ban on discos or Keith Richards wanting a restriction on the age of rock stars.

It is also confusing as to what some of these companies are hoping to gain, assuming that not all of them have turned “tree hugger” overnight.

The BAA’s clients are the world’s airlines, which are amongst the planet’s biggest polluters. Do they want sweeping changes that see half their clients aircraft grounded or do they just want less flights over UK airspace?

Or do these companies only want drastic and rapid changes that affect other industries not their own?

Or is it just good to have your company’s name on a letter endorsed by the Prince of Wales?
