Prince Charles has described the spreading use of GM crops as a gigantic experiment with nature and humanity which has gone badly wrong.

But now the government has hit back at the Prince’s statement and asked him to prove his claims with facts.

The environment minister, Phil Woolas, says that such statements should only be considered if the Prince and like minded thinkers can produce some real evidence of the risks that GM crops supposedly pose.

He did however make the point that the Prince had highlighted an important subject for debate, and that any potential risk should be considered.

He went on to say that the government has a responsibility to try to discover if these genetically modified crops could help bring about an end to worldwide hunger.

He also says that it is very easy for people to sit back and make proclamations about GM when they are surrounded by plentiful food supplies and it is not so easy to complain when you are going hungry.

Mr. Woolas says that GM is not just intended to help UK farmers make more efficient use of their land. it is also part of the government’s overall African strategy and a highly important part of a possible solution to Africa’s food crisis.

The government and scientists involved in GM research believe that new pest resistant strains of common food crops, such as wheat and rice, will give a better return from the same amount of land.

Those opposed to the use of GM crops question the actual ability for these crops to give higher yields and are also worried about potential as yet unknown environmental impacts.
