‘No’ 3rd runway at Heathrow
by Grant Draper
June 5, 2008
A contradiction to current targets sees plans for Heathrow expansion from its existing state to incorporate a 3rd runway, generating an extra 900 flights a day, not to mention endless noise and physical pollution for locals.
The Make a NOise Carnival and its thousands of visitors made their views known by marching in their thousands from Hatton Cross to Sipson village.
Upon reaching their destination the protestors held up banners and formed a huge human ‘No’ directed at the plans for the 3rd runway at Heathrow.
Residents of Sipson were out in force as well, as the project for the extra runway should sit directly on the village, meaning the connection of a bulldozer and the 750 homes which inhabit the village.
Protestors argue the fact that for many flying is just a luxury, trips to the likes of Paris, Manchester and Scotland, are just as comfortable on a Train, and if everyone who embarked on these journeys used a train, there wouldn’t be a need for a 3rd runway.
Of course on the flip side, the expansion of the airport would generate a huge input to the local economy, including a good quantity and variety of jobs, no good for the residents of Sipson though, who would have to relocate.
