192.com is calling for the government to implement a scheme, for UK citizens to opt out of receiving phonebooks.
With survey results showing the internet is quicker for finding information and phonebooks date too quickly, the gains of a phonebook are outweighed (no pun intended) by the 75,000 tonnes of waste, that three phonebooks per household, creates.
Add to the above that nearly 50% of people are unaware of facilities to recycle phonebooks, and the obvious cost of producing and distributing the books.
192.Com has launched a campaign using a catchy domain in the form of saynotophonebooks.com, where people can opt out of receiving a phonebook.
192.com say that the internet provides a much greater resource for obtaining information, and the opt out facility may save a small percentage of the 75,000 tonnes of waste, 680,000 barrels of oil, 2 billion litres of water and 437 million kilowatts of energy effectively wasted in the production of phonebooks.
