Dell Computer has announced that its huge 2.1 million square foot company headquarters, which is located in the city of Round Rock, Texas. Is now receiving all of its energy needs from renewable sources.

A full 60% of the buildings requirements are satisfied by Energy Future Holdings, wind generated electricity. Waste Management provides the remaining 40% from its gas to energy, landfill plant.

Dell signed up for the GreenChoice program, and as an additional part of that, intuitive it will soon use 18% renewable energy at its Austin Parmer Campus, up from 8%. Dell’s call center in Idaho is also 100% renewable with 3% solar power and the remaining 97% from wind generation.

Last autumn, Dell publicly announced that it intends to be carbon neutral before the end of this year. Paul Bell, Dell President called on other big tech companies to join them and make all their energy usage carbon neutral.

He said, “It’s time for our industry to take a lead role in creating a clean energy future. Today, we are challenging every technology company to work with their suppliers and partners in integrating green power and energy-efficient strategies into their operations.”

Its not all tree hugging, or a public relations exercise, the company says it will save money, “We’re using green technology to drive operating expense down.”
