Suzuki could soon be releasing a hydrogen fuel-cell powered motorbike.

The bike manufacturer has been working with Intelligent Energy, a UK-based firm, to develop the Crosscage - a concept motorbike fuelled by hydrogen. The two companies have now come to an agreement that will allow Suzuki to manufacture commercially viable versions of the bike.

The Crosscage will produce around 25% less carbon dioxide than traditional motorbikes, and will be powered by hydrogen from natural gas. It is “virtually silent” when it runs because fuel cell power requires no engine, and as such, there are no gears.

The release date for the bike has yet to be announced. Jon Moore, co-founder of Intelligent Energy, said: “We are just at the beginning of quite a long process.

“The technology […] works today. The main thing we are working on today is roadworthiness issues.”

The main problem is that no regulations currently exist that detail a road worth hydrogen fuel cell motorcycle.

Suzuki have yet to reveal the price of the Crosscage.
