Greenpeace trying to close coal-fired power station.

Environmental warriors, Greenpeace, were attempting to close down the coal-fired power station, located at Kingsnorth, Kent, UK, on Monday. They protested over new plans to build a second plant, at the same location.

The organisation said, that its activists managed to stop coal feeding, conveyor belts at the plant, some of the activists managing to climb a thousand steps, to the top of the plants chimney, with the intention of stopping production.

The plant is operated by E.ON UK, who claimed Monday that there were, ‘extensive stocks’, of coal, already available on site, at the plant.

A spokesman for E.ON stated that, the plant may have to close if the pro-testers cannot be removed, and their supplies of coal could not be replenished, he made no indication of how long these stocks may last.

Greenpeace makes rather optimistic sounding claims, that fuel supplies will run out within a few hours.

The Kingsnorth plant is home to 4 generators, each producing an output of 480 megawatts. One of these 4 units did cease production during last week, but the other three are, at this time, apparently running normally, this according to official data, from the National Grid.

E.ON says that it needs to build another generator at the site, to keep pace with energy requirements; Prime Minister Gordon Brown, has been urged by Greenpeace, to reject the proposal.

Greenpeace intend to have some activist’s abseil down the cooling stack, and paint the words “Gordon Bin It” on the concrete walls.

Robin Oakley Greenpeace energy expert stated. “It’s astonishing that, despite the massive threat we face from global warming, there are plans to build climate wrecking coal fired power stations in the UK for the first time in over 30 years, starting with one right here in Kent,” “Brown should be investing instead in energy efficiency, renewable energy and decentralized energy.”

E.ON counter claims that new plants will be much cleaner than older units and plant emissions of CO2 could be stored in what are known as, carbon capture, and storage units underground, but this technology is yet to be proved to be commercially viable.
